FAQ

What Causes Abdominal Pain?

Abdominal pain has many possible sources, ranging from mild to serious. The most common causes are considered minor and don’t necessarily require immediate medical attention, such as a pulled muscle or indigestion.

In some cases, abdominal pain can be a sign of a serious condition, such as appendicitis, and immediate medical intervention is imperative.

There are three main categories of abdominal pain: acute, chronic, and progressive. Acute abdominal pain lasts a few hours to a few days and typically resolves itself. Chronic abdominal pain can appear in flares and lasts for weeks, months, and even years. This is often a sign of an underlying medical condition. Progressive abdominal pain worsens with time.

Abdominal pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:

• Injury to the abdomen
• Pancreatitis

• Endometriosis

Gastrointestinal causes of abdominal pain include:
• Gallstones
• Peptic ulcer
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease
• Hiatal hernia
• Ulcerative colitis
• Diverticulitis
• Crohn’s Disease
• Intestinal obstruction
